The Swannanoa Fine Arts League is planning four basic classes in oil and acrylics taught by Michael McChesney from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, April 18 and April 20 at the studio at 999 Old Route 70. To register, call Pauline Tennant at 298-1227.

At least two major exhibitions of visual art are held by the SVAL during the year. In addition, several smaller exhibitions are held. The exhibitions are juried, and are limited to members of the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League. Non-members may join the League at the time they submit their art to be juried. The exhibitions are open to both professional and non-professional artists. Judges are employed for the major exhibits, and ribbons are awarded.

 
 
 

An intermediate level watercolor workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 16-18 at the Swannanoa Fine Arts League studio, 999 Old Highway 70 W. The instructor will be Paula Parker For registration and fees, call Pauline Tennant at 298-1227.

The Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League offers two workshops at its studio at 999 Old Highway 70W in Black Mountain.
1) Advanced Oil Painting workshop with Kaye Kinchen, on Feb. 6, 7 and 8, l0 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
2) Basic Watercolor workshop for beginners with local artist Parrish Rhodes.

Dates: Feb. 14 and 16; Feb. 21 and 23; 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Cost for each workshop: $150 for members; $155 for non-members. For registration and additional information, call Pauline Tennant at 828-298-1227.

Open studio events include 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, sculpture leadership with Campbell;
12:30-4 p.m. Tuesday, portrait painting with Steve Hue; and
10 a.m. to noon Friday, live model session with Marianna Williams. Call Hue at 664-0501 for Saturday portrait classes.

Lectures are presented by SVFAL in the Education Room of the Tyson Library in Black Mountain. Speakers are outstanding experts in their field. Lectures have been given on a wide range of topics, and often include demonstrations.

For example: Artistic use of the computer to produce original and expressive art. Advanced watercolor techniques. Use of classical methods of pigment preparation for maximum brilliance and durability of paintings. Artistic design of stained glass. Effective use of nude models in fine art. Plein air landscape painting in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
