Karen Chambers teaches pastel painting. Learn to infuse your paintings with vibrant color and life. Open to all levels of students from beginner to advanced. Basic knowledge of color theory helpful as classes are about color layering to achieve a vibrant glow and give life to your paintings. Cost: Class cost is payable on a monthly basis. $60 day, or $30 half day, times the number of Wednesdays in the month.

Award winning artist, Cheryl Keefer, teaches Oil Painting from Life, (Not photos) Students of all levels. Painting from life is an excellent starting point to begin to see as a painter. It is also a challenge for advanced students as they begin to see more and experiment with different ways of approaching a painting. Class focus is on values, color, and composition. Subjects include landscape, still life, and the figure. Cost: $25 per day.

Plein air & studio oil painting workshop with Roger Dale Brown. (www.rogerdalebrown.com) A three-day intensive workshop designed for the beginning/moderate artist to the professional, Instructional work designed for each experience level. Indoor class instruction and lots of painting time in and outdoors. Class exercises: Seeing color, value, shape, form and composition. Learn how to make creative decisions and use opportunities in plein air. Cost $350. $100 deposit and registration due by March 1.

Appalachian Pastel Society Meeting July 14th 10am-12noon. Held at the Black Mountain Library (educational room). Members Kay Gordon and Denise Geiger will be giving an entertaining slide presentation on the IAPS Trade Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Take I-40 to exit 64, go 0.3 mi. North on US-9, then 2 blocks West on US-70 to N.Dougherty St. on right.

Lorelle Bacon will be doing a Beginners and Intermediate Watercolor workshop. It will be held at Woolworth Walk in Asheville. Cost will be $100 if  the teacher furnishes all supplies and $80 if you bring your own. Students will complete at least two paintings while learning a variety of techniques.

View the Winner's List! for the 39th Fall Juried Art Competition

If contact information is not listed, you may call Charlotte Chesnutt at 669-0159 for general meetings, and Mary McMurray at 669-7224 for workshops.

The exhibitions are juried, and are limited to members of the Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League. Non-members may join the League at the time they submit their art to be juried. The exhibitions are open to both professional and non-professional artists. Judges are employed for the major exhibits, and ribbons are awarded.

 

 

 

Lectures are presented by SVFAL in the Education Room of the Tyson Library in Black Mountain. Speakers are outstanding experts in their field. Lectures have been given on a wide range of topics, and often include demonstrations.

For example: Artistic use of the computer to produce original and expressive art. Advanced watercolor techniques. Use of classical methods of pigment preparation for maximum brilliance and durability of paintings. Artistic design of stained glass. Effective use of nude models in fine art. Plein air landscape painting in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
